Russia Begins Production of New Anti-Submarine Helicopter

The Russian military airline producer Kamov has begun construction of a new anti-submarine combat helicopter, a company spokesman said Thursday.

Construction had started on the first of the aircraft, which will be powered by two 1,550 horse power motors, Kamov`s assistant chief engineer Venyamin Kassyanikov told the Interfax-AVN news agency.

He also pointed out that all the equipment and systems of the helicopter would be produced in Russia, adding that the price of each craft would be between 2.5 and 3 million dollars /2.8 to 3.36 million euros/.

According to the company, the Russian defence ministry requires around 350 Ka-60 helicopters which are scheduled to replace the Mi-4 which is currently in service.

Chopper Crashes During Colo. Rescue

DURANGO, Colo. (AP) - A sightseeing plane crashed in a remote mountain creek valley, and rescuers reached the two passengers Thursday after a search helicopter crash-landed. No one was killed.

After the plane crash Wednesday, the pilot hiked six hours to find a place where his cell phone would work so he could call for help.

The plane's passengers - one wearing shorts - were found early Thursday with broken bones. None of the eight aboard the helicopter from Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque was injured.

The four-seat, single-engine Cessna 172 took off from Farmington, N.M., and crashed about 60 miles to the north in a grove of trees, said Mike Spray of the Civil Air Patrol.

The pilot was picked up by helicopter about six hours later and briefly helped with the search.

A dozen rescuers were ferried by ski lift to the top of Durango Mountain Ski resort and then boarded Sno-Cats and snowmobiles to head for the crash site 25 miles north of Durango.

Snow flurries and temperatures in the 20s were reported in the region overnight. The passengers had jackets but no survival gear, said Lt. Dan Bender of the La Plata County sheriff's office.

The rescuers reached the site before sunrise Thursday, said Butch Knowlton, the director of emergency preparedness for La Plata County.

The two passengers, both in their 40s, had broken ribs, a broken ankle and some facial injuries. One was from Florida and the other from San Juan County, N.M. Their names, and that of the 31-year-old pilot of Farmington, were not released.

The MH-53J Pave Low helicopter crash-landed less than a mile from the plane-crash site after its main rotor struck a tree as it either was landing or departing, said Steve Milligan, an Air Force spokesman.

Two Turkish Warplanes Crash, Pilots Safe
ANKARA (Reuters) - Two Turkish military F4 jets crashed in southeastern Turkey on Thursday but the pilots escaped uninjured, an official said.

State-run Anatolian news agency had initially reported the jets were F16s but it later said they were F4s and that was confirmed by a local government official in the city of Malatya.

``Four pilots were rescued safely,'' the official told Reuters. ``The planes were flying over Malatya. Helicopters have arrived at the scene to deal with the wreckage.''

The official said the planes were on a training flight but there was no information on why they went down. Nobody was immediately available at Turkey's General Staff to give further details.

Last year Turkey lost several military planes in accidents including one in May, when a transport plane crashed killing all 34 people on board.

F-16 Fighter Jet Crashes in New Jersey
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (Reuters) - A New Jersey Air National Guard F-16 fighter jet crashed near a training range in southern New Jersey on Thursday and the pilot ejected safely, suffering minor injuries, military officials said.

Spokesmen for the 177th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard in Atlantic City, New Jersey, said the F-16 C model crashed just after 10 a.m. EST, but it was not known what impact the aircraft made on the ground.

``He has been found, he's been recovered OK. He is on his way to the hospital to be checked out, minor injuries from ejection,'' said Col. John Dwyer of the 177th Fighter Wing.

Another spokesman, Ray Martyniuk, said the plane crashed in the sparsely populated area known as the Pine Barrens, near the Warren Grove weapons grade training range. A section of the Garden State Parkway, one of New Jersey's major motorways, was temporarily closed.

Martyniuk said the Atlantic City-based unit, but not this particular aircraft, had been involved in flying surveillance missions over the northeastern United States after the Sept. 11 hijacked plane attacks.

Russia signs contract to build two destroyers for Chinese Navy

RUSSIA yesterday announced that it had signed an arms contract to build two new destroyers for the Chinese Navy at a cost of $1.4billion.
The ships will be delivered to the Chinese by 2006 and will be equipped with up-to-date missiles, bombs, torpedo, radar and anti-submarine systems as well as new anti-ship supersonic missiles.

The vessels, able to reach 34 knots, will add formidable power to the Chinese Navy.

The contract follows a $650million weapons sale to India and underlines the crucial importance to the Russian economy of its arms sales, one of its main sources of revenue after oil exports.

India is one of Russia’s primary arms markets and the present tension with Pakistan is deeply worrying to Moscow. India is putting pressure on Moscow to supply vast quantities of emergency spares, but the Russian factories are unable to meet demand. Should war break out and Moscow be unable to resupply India immediately, its arms sales would suffer a catastrophic blow.

This has added weight to Russian efforts to enforce restraint on India, 70 per cent of whose weapons are of Soviet or Russian origin.

Together with the Chinese, the Russians promised at the recent summit meeting of the Shanghai Co-operation Council to use their influence to restrain the military confrontation between India and Pakistan. Since both countries are crucially dependent on Russia and China respectively, that means that each will look to Beijing and Moscow for emergency spares and other arms that may be needed in any future war.

Unlike China, Russia — the third largest arms exporter — has not announced any new arms supplies to India during the present build-up. It has come under considerable pressure to match any weapons sent to Pakistan, and would be…
